Sorry to hear about your drill! I think that can be a sign of failed or worn-out brushes. When they wear down, they can create that kind of screeching sound before they completely fail, which then cuts the power. Another possibility I could think of, though less likely with that high-pitched noise is a gearbox issue. Sometimes a gear can strip or break, which can also make a nasty noise and lock up the tool. If it's the brushes, it's often a pretty easy and cheap fix you can do yourself. There are plenty of videos online showing how to replace them. I suggest you check that first before you consider a full replacement or a costly repair shop visit!
