cordless drill woes

My trusty cordless hand drill is starting to get sloppy. The jaws are worn out and just can't grip small drill bits anymore anything under like 1/8" just slips and spins. Super frustrating
Has anyone successfully fixed or replaced a drill chuck on their own? Or is it time for me to buy a new drill?

Also, any general tips on how to keep my hand drill in prime condition? I want this thing to last forever!

Unscrew counterclockwise after you remove the center screw (which is usually reverse threaded btw). New chucks aren't expensive, and if the motor and battery are still good, you can still fix it. For maintenance, blow out the vents regularly and don't overtighten bits, that's what wears the jaws prematurely

Yep, you can usually replace a drill chuck yourself and it’s not too bad if you get the right size. Many cordless drills have a threaded or keyed chuck that just unscrews with a some elbow grease

yeah, fixing the chuck is absolutely doable and way cheaper than buying a whole new drill, especially if the motor and batteries are still strong.
honestly, it's an easy DIY. You're mainly replacing a screw and the chuck itself. The important part is confirming that center screw is reverse threaded (lefty tighty, rightyloosey). Put a thick rubber band around the drill chuck to protect the metal while you use a screwdriver to break that screw loose

I have replaced several of my chucks on my battery and air drills. Once I find out what size chuck I need, I try to buy two or three to keep on hand. There are a number of online machine parts supply stores that I buy from and usually have good prices on chucks, collets and wear items. I have converted two of my most used Dewalt battery and hammer drills from keyless chucks to keyed Jacobs style chucks when the keyless chuck was worn out or damaged.
