The Adapter Dilemma

My roommate is on a mission, and I swear, it's a saga. He's trying to build out a big impact socket set, but he's got this modern 1/2" impact wrench that's a beast.

he's looking for 1" sockets in the 1" to 2" range, and he's convinced the right move is a low profile adapter so he can use his 1/2" wrench.
But he's stuck. He can't find a 1/2" female to 1" male sleeve adapter anywhere.
Would a better long-term solution be to just get a smaller 3/4" impact wrench and a 3/4" to 1" adapter?

Anyone know if this mythical adapter actually exists?
 
That's the right call! The 3/4" impact wrench and a 3/4" to 1" adapter is actually the safer and more practical solution. These adapters are built to handle the immense torque without breaking. He'll also find a much wider range of 3/4" drive sockets in the 1" to 2" range.
 
Think about whether he truly needs a 1 drive. A 3/4 socket set, with sizes up to 2 or more, can tackle many tough jobs. See if 3/4 impact-rated joints and extensions will do the work. Investing in a 3/4 impact wrench might be a wiser choice for the long haul when it comes to serious, heavy-duty tasks.
 
That 1/2" female to 1" male adapter is basically mythical and most impact adapters only step down, not up. Getting a 3/4" impact and a 3/4" to 1" adapter is way more practical and safer
 
I have worked in the Industrial/Heavy Equipment industry for 30 years of my professional life and what you are looking for is a UNICORN in the tool world. I have 1/2 drive air impact with at 825ft pounds of torque at best. When that is not enough to use for the job you go to the 3/4 drive. The idea of using a 1/2 drive with a 1 inch impact socket to me is an accident just waiting to happen plus i would like to see if you could keep your grip on that impact and not destroy your wrists. I can remember a case in point of a young apprentice that was working with me on replacing a clutch brake on a Stokes 125 ton press used to clip the tail off pipe fittings 3/4inch to 1 1/2inch so the fitting could be then ground and cleaned by the Snag grinders. Now back to the point, the young apprentice grabbed my 1/2 IR impact and started to remove the outside cover from the clutch held on by 18mm by 4inch Allen bolts, 8 of them to be precise. This part went smoothly, now next step remove 2 and only 2 of the bolts that held on the clutch spring brake cover that retains the eight-6inch by 18inch springs to install two 1 1/2 by 36inch long jacking rods. the apprentice removed the first retaining bolt with a 1/2 drive 22mm Allen impact socket with ease, the next one was the issue, he thought he had a good grip on the impact but it grabbed and he got his wrist broken in the process. I am thinking if an adapter would of been used there would be shrapnel in the deal.
 
I've never seen a 1/2" female to 1" male adapter, and honestly if it did exist it'd probably grenade under torque. That's asking a lot from a 1/2" anvil. A 3/4" impact with a step-up adapter is a way more realistic long-term play.
