Does anyone know what brand this shoulder plane is?

I bought this from an antique tool shop for £35 and I'm super curious if I got a good deal/ I'd love to know the history of such a tool, the only insciption I can find is O.Smith on the blade wedge. it almost appears as though it's a personalised gift rather than a brand. The casting is pretty decent and just needs a good sand/ flattening.

If anyone knows what this is and whether It's a known brand or not I'd love to know.

Interesting question. Not an expert at shoulder planes so I did some research. Closest thing I could find is...

It eas common that people would ID their tools used in common shops. I would guess that is an owners name.

Looks like a traditional infill hand plane, possibly a user-made or craftsman-built piece rather than a mass-produced brand. The name "O. Smith" on the wedge is likely the original owner or maker, which was pretty common back in the day, especially with custom or shop-made tools. At £35, if the casting is solid and everything's intact, you got a good deal.

I have a mid Victorian cast infill plane that is nearly identical. Search carefully for a makers mark as they are often very faint compared to owners initials. They are fine workers these infills and the irons sharpen easily.

Wow, that's a great find! £35 for that old hand plane is a steal, especially if it's in good shape. If the main body is solid, all the pieces are there, and it was made by a craftsman, you've got a sweet deal
