Beware of loose or poorly fitted handles

Especially on hammers, chisels, and older vintage tools, even a little bit of wiggle changes how the tool strikes or feels in the hand, and it can put off accuracy
Over time the wood can shrink, the wedge can back out, or the eye was never fitted properly to begin with so taking a few minutes to refit the wedge, oil the handle, or re seat it tightly can make the tool feel brand new. Most of us here already know this but just a quick reminder for the weekend

Good reminder. I’ve had a hammer loosen up on me before and you really notice it once it starts moving around. Takes almost no time to fix, but makes a big difference in how the tool feels and how safe it is.

@the winner takes it all exactly! A loose handle sneaks up on you, and suddenly what should be a simple swing turns into a safety hazard. Re-seating and oiling really does make an old tool feel solid again. Have you had to do this often with your vintage tools?
